技術翻訳の秘訣（増補版）
両方とも〜の間、〜の期間を表しますが、
while の後は、主語+動詞
during の後は、名詞（句）が続きます。
簡単なようですが意外と間違いが多いので気をつけましょう。
例）
Stop the machine while you are measuring.
Stop the machine during measurement.
のようになります。
上のように示すと「なるほど」と思うのですが、「計測中は機械を止めなさい。」に対する英訳を考えるとき Stop the machine during measuring. と、ついうっかりやってしまいがちです。これは間違いです。
正しくは
Stop the machine while measuring.
(you are を省略した形です。あるいは省略せず you are をつけた形になります。)
他の例を下記に挙げておきます。
Bad examples:
(a) Do not start the machine during the red lamp is on.
(b) This software cannot be used while the maintenance time.
Good examples:
(a) I will stay home while you are out.
(b) The lamp stays on while the machine is running.
(c) I have nothing to do during the day.
(d) The computer runs during this time period.
